FIREFIGHTER/EMT TESTING PROCESS
The Bainbridge Island Fire Department tests for Entry-Level Firefighter/EMT twice yearly for training starting the following January or July. The job description and qualifications for Entry-Level Firefighter/EMT can be found here. Please note, all successful applicants will attend an EMT and Firefighter I academy, so Firefighter I and EMT are not prerequisites.
To be considered for employment, you must:
- Meet the required qualifications listed in the job description, excluding IFSAC Firefighter I and EMT,
- Pass the Public Safety Testing written firefighter test and submit your score to BIFD, and
- Submit proof of passing the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the twelve months prior to the application closing date. Documentation should be submitted with your application.
Note: BIFD does not conduct the CPAT. Third-party options such as Public Safety Testing or National Testing Network are available.
Testing generally consists of the following:
- August 15th / February 15th, we will send an application to you if you have posted a passing PST written score within the prior 12 months.
- Applications must be completed and returned with a passing CPAT attached.
- An in-person assessment center will be on September 9th / March 24th at Station 21. The assessment center may include a panel interview, practical skills station, presentation, written test on BIFD, or general knowledge.
- Chiefs’ panel interviews for top-performing candidates will be held on September 30th / March 31st at Station 21.
Successful candidates can expect several pre-employment conditions, including:
- Background investigation
- NFPA-compliant medical examination, including vaccinations
- Suitability profile examination
- Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
